Village Loses in Court
The Fire Starter has been extremely critical of Mayor Dennis Hannon's management style in general. His "my way or the highway" approach has cost village taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars with little or no tangible benefit.
Mistake #15 : It’s My Way Or The Highway
How many of you, when you hear the word ‘consensus’, inwardly groan? How many of you blame your white hair and lined faces on long meetings trying to reach consensus? When I think of consensus, an image of one person blocking a decision and saying, “It just doesn’t feel right” plays over and over in my head.
Consensus decision-making can sometimes seem like trading the tyranny of the many for the tyranny of the one. The fact is, that most of the time, we will not get what we most want in a group. That is the nature of groups. If you have ever been a part of any group, whether at school, in a romance, or among friends, then you know that you often go along with the group for the group’s sake, even if the decision is not your personal favorite.
Group oriented cultures are very familiar with compromise and concession for the good of the group. But our culture places such a high value on autonomy and personal rights; it’s no wonder that the vast majority of us live singly. In order to be a happy group member, one must be able to tolerate not getting what one wants much of the time. If you value your own wishes above others, then you might be happier either alone or as a despot.
