March 29 is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day
Locally owned and independently operated businesses are the lifeblood of our economy. With that being said, it gives me great pleasure to celebrate the small business owner on their own day. March 29 has been dedicated as National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day.
It’s great for the Mom and Pops to have their own day. If you understand the realities of theirjob, you’ll know they live their business 24/7. Early in the morning to late in the evening, someone needs to open the store, take care of the financials, order merchandise, and do everything else that keeps their business running.
Is 2012 the year the mom and pop’s die?
As an entrepreneur, I am naturally inclined to believe that I can do things better, and faster than a big company. Some people call that arrogance. Some people call it ignorance. But if you talk to me, you’ll know it’s neither of those. It’s hard to explain exactly what it is (definitely not the spicy Thai food I ate either)…but I see it all around me at trade shows. We visited multiple mom-and-pop shops throughout Argentina. Although people in Northern Argentina use the bigger retail stores often, the mom-and-pops have a strong presence. We found that Coke product inventory was far superior in every shop we entered, and that the displays and coolers were likely to be Coke-centric.
